My Family Reunion Myrtle Beach, SC July 28-30-2023

Making memories @ Myrtle Beach

Had a great time at my family reunion this year in Myrtle Beach, SC. My nephew, Glenn, his wife, Andrew(pictured below), and their family did a fantastic job hosting this year’s Summers-Cowell Family Reunion at the Palette Resort. Very proud of them. My late sister, Pat Summers, named her twins, Glen and Glenda, after me. It was a blessing having Glen and his family step up to the plate to pull the event together— a monumental task since none of our family lives in South Carolina. Huge hugs to the hosts for the welcome gifts given to every family, school book bags for the kids and the excellent food.

This year, we dressed in royal blue and lime green. Not sure how we came up with the colors, but it was fun seeing everyone’s interpretation of the color scheme—from tie-dyed to beach-themed outfits and everything in between. We wore shades of blue and green, for the most part, the entire weekend! it was kind of cool. Everyone we ran into at the hotel on elevators and other places kept saying: “Y’all must be with the family reunion.”

We had relatives who came from New Orleans (where the reunion was held in 2022), north and central Florida, and Georgia. We missed family members—both near and far—who didn’t make it this year. We hope to see those living in Las Vegas, New York, Alabama Miami and other places next year in St. Petersburg, FL, the site voted on for 2024!

Glen Gordon and his wife, Andrew, of Arcadia, FL, pose for a quick photo.

At the Friday night meet and greet, we had our usual fish fry. Seafood pasta, spaghetti, crab cakes and other fixings accompanied the variety of fried fish.

Our Saturday night banquet was a feast: brisket, barbecue ribs, baked chicken, chopped chicken, chopped pork, souse(if you don’t already know what souse is, don’t ask), collard greens, mac and cheese, yellow rice, dirty rice, potato salad and key lime pie, peach and apple cobbler and vanilla cake.

New this year was the Family Feud game night starring my family members. Two words to describe it: Hysterically funny. Our hosts provided prizes for the winners.

During the reunion, we also entertained ourselves with Spades, Uno and other card games, board games and of course, we spent time at the pool and the beach (the # 1 activity for the kids).

Val and I are pictured ready to meet and eat in the first gallery photo below.
